Keizer, OR Area Guide

Located in Marion County, Oregon, Keizer has a population of over 34,000 residents (2006 census estimate) and is a part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named after Thomas Dove and John Brooks Keizur, two pioneers who moved to the area during the Wagon Train of 1843.

Keizer History

Keizer was originally located at Keizer Bottom, just off the banks of the Willamette River. In 1861 the settlement was hit by a brutal flood, and the residents decided to move their homes to higher ground. Floods continued to hit the area, but after dams were constructed in the 1950s to regulate the flow of the Willamette River the town was finally able to prosper. The City of Salem tried several times to annex the Keizer community, but on November 2, 1982 Keizer finally became its own official city. The original settlement of Keizer Bottom is now home to Keizer Rapids Park, a public park complete with a dog park, playground, nature trails, boat-in camping, and sport courts.
